Friday Harbour Resort

Friday Harbour Resort is the largest resort development of its kind in North America. This $1.5 billion project, spanning over 600-acres, includes: a 200-acre 18-hole Golf Course designed by Carrick Design; a 200-acre environmentally protected area; and a 200-acre Marina Village. The Marina Village comprises 1600 high and medium-density resort residential units master planned according to the principles of “new urbanism”. The master plan for the Marina Village includes numerous types of public spaces as well as a commercial area, promenade, boardwalk, recreation facility, theatre, two hotels and a 115-metre long public pier.

Envisioned as a contemporary interpretation of “cottage country” and is destined to become one of Ontario’s premier tourist destinations. The development is being designed to achieve a high environmental standard. The project team comprises a broad team of specialists committed to design excellence and sustainable initiatives. Sustainable design initiatives include the development of an aquatic vegetation transplant program, the creation of new frog, salamander and turtle habitat and the replanting of over 350 butternut seedlings and saplings. Site hydrology has been an important design consideration, directing clean water back into Lake Simcoe or into cisterns for later use in irrigation. High albedo surface materials were selected for buildings and paved surfaces to reduce the heat island effect, while site plantings maximize biodiversity and emphasize drought tolerant native plants. Schollen & Company Inc. is the design lead and project manager on this signature project.
